Frequently Asked Questions
Each piece of my artwork is a collaboration between vision, material, and meaning. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about my creative process, materials, and installation approach. If you’re curious about something that isn’t covered here, feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to share more.
How do you come up with a design for your artwork?
My design process begins with a period of reflection. For personal work, inspiration often comes through dreams or quiet meditation. For commissioned pieces, the process starts after I’ve met with the client and spent time in the space where the artwork will live. From there, I allow an image or concept to emerge, which becomes the starting point. As the piece develops, I remain open to changes—the stones themselves often influence the direction. The final design is a collaboration between vision, material, and the creative process.
How do you hang your work?
I work with an expert installation team with decades of experience handling large-scale artworks and exhibits for institutions like the Smithsonian Museum, National Geographic, and museums around the world. For smaller pieces, we typically use a metal cleat system that holds the work securely and allows for easy installation. Larger pieces may also hang on cleats, though the wall may need reinforcement depending on its structure. Extra-large or complex installations require custom engineering and a site-specific approach. Every installation is unique, and we ensure each one is safe, secure, and beautifully integrated into the space.
How much does that thing weigh?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions—and the answer varies with each piece. I create works that range from just a few ounces to several thousand pounds. For reference, an average wall-hanging for a home, around 24 inches in diameter or square, typically weighs between 15 and 40 pounds. The final weight depends on the size, materials, and design.
Where do you get your stones?
My stones come from a wide range of sources around the world. I work with landscape suppliers, crystal and gem dealers, and occasionally receive stones as gifts. I also collect stones on walks in nature, always with care and respect. When I’m working on site in another region, I like to incorporate stones native to that land. I look for a diversity of stones that fit the tone and spirit of each piece—texture, color, and shape all play a role. I see stones as living materials and always ask for their permission before including them in my work. Each piece is a partnership between artist and stone.
Where can I see your work?
Most of my work is commissioned and installed in private or semi-public spaces. Many clients have graciously agreed to allow viewings by appointment. My studio holds a limited inventory due to space, but I welcome potential clients to visit and see select pieces in person. To schedule a visit, simply reach out through the contact page.
How long does it take to make a piece?
Timelines vary. Small pieces may take about a month, while larger works can take 9 months or more. The schedule depends on the complexity of the piece, material availability, and collaboration with the client or design team.
Do you take commissions?
Yes, I do accept commissions. I schedule them well in advance and currently have openings for the upcoming year. If you’re interested in exploring a custom piece, please reach out through the contact page to begin the conversation.
